The Teachers' Standards
If you haven’t already done so, we suggest you take a look at the overview of the Teachers’ Standards – as these are the criteria you will be trained against, and be asked to provide evidence for, whilst you are on ITT – they are also the same standards you’ll be supported to develop whilst on your newly qualified teacher (NQT) statutory induction (‘NQT year’); and what you’ll be appraised against for performance management once you are in a teaching post. They are also used to help identify what continuing professional development (CPD) you may require.
If you are going to train to teach a Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) subject, then STEM.org.uk has selected the best resources for each of the 8 standards and collated them here: www.stem.org.uk/secondary-science/teachers-standards. Even if you are not going to train to teach a STEM subject, much of the information is still relevant as it’s not necessarily subject-specific.
Safeguarding of pupils is crucial. If you haven’t already done so, we recommend you read Part 1 of the DfE’s Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) document for school and college staff, which can be downloaded from here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/keeping-children-safe-in-education--2
