Making the transition into teaching;
Karl Howarth

What did you do before becoming a teacher?

Previously I worked in the leisure industry, with a focus on generating and retaining business.

What inspired you to get into teaching?

My main reason for switching professions was the desire to have a stable career rather than ‘just a job’. My wife is a teacher, as are some of my friends, so I had a good level of insight as to what the role involved. Having my own children also made me realise I was passionate about helping give children a good start in life through education.

Tell us about the training process…

I received a lot of invaluable support from family and friends during my training year. My training provider was excellent and secured me school placements close to home; this helped me maintain a work/life balance. I did, however, struggle slightly with the academic side, having not dealt with this since leaving University 14 years ago.
The school day can be a bit draining and leave me tired, but I enjoy being able to spend the weekends and holidays with my family. In terms of finances, the starting salary is comfortable to live on and there are clear routes of progression.

What are your plans for the future?

I am currently in my NQT year. My ambition is to move up the ladder and into a headship role.

Sum up your experience for us…

I had very good school placements which helped make the transition successful, along with the support of my current school. It’s important to find a school that fits with how you work to help the process run as smoothly as possible. Since training to become a teacher, I now have a career I am passionate about. It has been great to see the children in my class making good progress and I have even been given nice feedback from parents as to how much their children enjoy being in my class!
